Rohit, who took time off from cricket to be with his wife during the birth, missed the start of the first Test in Perth. During his absence, Jasprit Bumrah captained the Indian team, leading them to a dominant 295-run victory over Australia. KL Rahul and Yashasvi Jaiswal, who filled in for Rohit, also impressed with their performances, giving India an early lead in the series.
Now back with the squad, Rohit is leading India in a practice game against Australia’s PM’s XI at the Manuka Oval in Canberra. He will return as captain for the second Test in Adelaide, scheduled for December 6, a pink-ball day-night encounter. Rohit is keen to adapt to the challenges of playing with the pink ball and is expected to return as an opener, which could affect KL Rahul’s position in the batting order.
It will also be interesting to see how Rohit’s return impacts the playing XI, especially given the strong performance in Perth. While Shubman Gill’s availability remains uncertain, his participation in net sessions offers hope for his recovery.
Having faced criticism after India’s disappointing home whitewash against New Zealand, Rohit will be eager to prove himself. He aims to help India continue their winning streak and move closer to securing a place in the World Test Championship (WTC) final for the 2023-25 cycle.
