Ahead of the commencement of the annual Amarnath Yatra, Inspector General of Police (IGP) Kashmir Zone V.K. Birdi stressed the importance of appropriate and sustained security measures to protect pilgrims from any harm by Anti-National Elements (ANEs) during the pilgrimage.
The 52-day-long Amarnath Yatra is set to begin on June 29 and will conclude on August 19 in the Kashmir Himalayas.
In a security meeting held on Saturday with officers from the police and Central Armed Police Forces (CAPFs), Birdi highlighted the need for robust and continuous security measures to ensure the safety of pilgrims. He also inspected the Navyug Tunnel to Chandanwari to review security arrangements along the Yatra route and at various camping sites, according to a police statement.
The inspection aimed to ensure a safe and seamless pilgrimage for all participants. Emphasis was placed on monitoring, strict vigilance, and patrolling to prevent security breaches. Birdi closely examined the security arrangements at various camping sites, including on-ground deployment, access control, AS check teams, surveillance systems, and emergency response protocols.
Lauding the efforts of the police and CAPFs in maintaining high vigilance and preparedness, Birdi urged them to maintain the same level of dedication throughout the SANJY-2024 period. At Chandanwari, he conducted a detailed review of the security measures with officers from the police and CAPFs.
The officers discussed the current security scenario and strategies to further enhance the safety of the Yatra. They deliberated on coordination mechanisms, intelligence sharing, and contingency plans to address potential threats.
Birdi reiterated the commitment of the police and CAPFs to ensure the safety and well-being of all pilgrims, urging officers to remain alert and proactive in their duties.
IGP Kashmir was briefed by the officers about the proposed security measures and arrangements for the upcoming Amarnath Yatra-2024. The briefing covered access control, ASCs, camp security arrangements, the use of modern and technical gadgets, road opening parties, laterals, and preparations for disaster management.
The chairing officer directed the officers to ensure better coordination and synergy with different security agencies working on the ground for the peaceful conduct of the Yatra. He also emphasized the use of modern security gadgets and technology, including CCTVs and drones, to enhance the security surveillance grid and thwart the designs of ANEs and terrorists.
