Eighteen more people at the Indian Institute of Technology, Madras (IIT-M), tested positive for Covid-19 on Friday, after which educational institutions across the state capital started creating a makeshift quarantine room and the state’s health ministry asking the citizens to follow Covid-19 appropriate behavior. With the detection of new cases, the total case count at the IIT-Madras campus reached the figure of 30.

State’s health government officials have stepped up testing at the IIT-Madras campus and are planning to conduct more than 2,000 tests in the coming couple of days. Tamil Nadu health secretary J Radhakrishnan said, “ 12 people at IIT-M were found to be infected with the virus and were quarantined on the campus on Thursday, 18 new cases were found today.” The IIT-Madras administration informed the media that none of the students requires hospital treatment as their oxygen levels are normal.

The campus of IIT-Madras saw a sudden jump of cases in the last two days. On Tuesday, one case of Covid was defected while on the following day, two more people tested positive.
