In 2008, the Tata Nano, famously dubbed the “people’s car,” was launched with much fanfare at the 9th Auto Expo in New Delhi. Ratan Tata’s vision of offering a car priced at just Rs 1 lakh turned heads across the world, making it the most affordable car ever produced. With its compact design, 625cc engine, and vivid colors, it was aimed at India’s budget-conscious middle class. The Nano gave millions of two-wheeler families the hope of owning a car, and its debut saw overwhelming demand, with over 203,000 bookings in just a few weeks.
However, despite its promising start, the Tata Nano’s journey was cut short. While it initially garnered excitement and pre-orders, environmental concerns and practical limitations gradually led to its decline. By 2018, Tata Motors decided to phase out the Nano, ending the story of a car that once captured the imagination of India’s “aam aadmi.”
