Raksha Bandhan, also known as Rakhi, will be celebrated on Monday, August 19, 2024. This festival, observed during the Hindu month of Shravan, celebrates the bond between siblings, where sisters tie a thread, known as rakhi, around their brothers’ wrists, praying for their health and prosperity. Brothers, in return, often give gifts to their sisters as a token of their appreciation.

Regarding bank closures on Raksha Bandhan, not all states will observe the holiday, and therefore, banks will not be closed everywhere. According to the Reserve Bank of India’s (RBI) bank holiday calendar, public and private sector banks will be closed in the following states on August 19, 2024, in observance of Raksha Bandhan:

– Tripura
– Gujarat
– Odisha
– Uttarakhand
– Rajasthan
– Uttar Pradesh
– Himachal Pradesh

The festival takes place on the full moon day, or Purnima, in the Shravan month. This year, the Raksha Bandhan thread ceremony, as per Drik Panchang, is recommended to start at 1:30 pm and continue until 9:08 pm on August 19.

Additionally, other notable bank holidays in August 2024 include:

– August 20 (Tuesday): Banks will be closed in Kochi for Sree Narayana Guru Jayanthi.
– August 24 (Saturday): Nationwide closure due to the fourth Saturday.
– August 25 (Sunday): Nationwide closure due to the weekend.
