: In a significant escalation of tensions in the Rajya Sabha, Congress President Mallikarjun Kharge has leveled serious accusations against Vice President Jagdeep Dhankhar, asserting that the chairman is exhibiting favoritism towards the government. Kharge stated that the functioning of the House is now dictated by political considerations rather than established rules.
“Since 1952, no resolution has been brought under Article 67 as the vice president has never engaged in politics. Currently, the House is being run by politics, not rules, and the chairman has indulged in partisan behavior,” Kharge remarked, referencing the recent no-confidence motion filed against Dhankhar.
He further criticized the chairman’s conduct, claiming it undermines the dignity of the position. “The Rajya Sabha chairman’s actions have been contrary to the post’s dignity. He has targeted opposition leaders, denying them opportunities to speak while frequently praising the government,” Kharge added.
Discussing the ongoing proceedings in the Rajya Sabha, Kharge likened the chairman’s approach to that of a school headmaster, delivering ‘pravachan’ (sermons) to seasoned opposition leaders and interrupting their speeches. “The biggest reason for disruptions in Rajya Sabha is the chairman himself. He is acting as a government spokesperson to secure his next promotion,” Kharge asserted in a comprehensive attack on Dhankhar’s leadership.
In defense of the no-confidence motion against Dhankhar, Kharge stated, “The chairman’s conduct in the House has harmed the country’s dignity. We are fed up with the Rajya Sabha chairman’s behavior and partiality, which is why we submitted a notice for his removal.”
However, the INDIA bloc’s attempt to remove Dhankhar is expected to face challenges, as they lack a majority in either House. Meanwhile, NDA leaders have dismissed the motion as “politically motivated.”
Union Parliamentary Affairs Minister Kiren Rijiju responded to the Congress’s allegations, stating, “If the opposition attacks the dignity of the Chairman, we will protect it. The Congress party and its allies have consistently disregarded the Chair’s directions. Vice President Jagdeep Dhankhar comes from a humble background and always speaks about people’s welfare inside and outside Parliament. We respect him and condemn the actions of the 60 MPs who signed this notice. The NDA has the majority, and we all have faith in the Chairman.”
