In a widely speculated move, Rahul Gandhi is set to relinquish his Wayanad Lok Sabha seat today in favor of the family stronghold of Raebareli, which he had also won by a significant margin, sources told NDTV. This decision paves the way for Congress leader Priyanka Gandhi Vadra to contest from the Kerala constituency, a possibility that has been generating buzz in recent days.

Additionally, sources reveal that despite strong support from Congress leaders, Rahul Gandhi is unlikely to assume the role of Leader of Opposition in the Lok Sabha. Taking up this position would have granted him Cabinet rank status, improved coordination with allies in the INDIA bloc, and helped the Congress present a strong front with its increased presence in the Lok Sabha.

“He has conveyed that he is not inclined to take up the post,” a source said.

The Congress will hold a meeting around 5 pm, during which the decision regarding the Wayanad constituency is likely to be made, as today is the last day to convey it to the Lok Sabha secretariat. The decision on the Leader of the Opposition may also be addressed during the meeting, but the selection of the Wayanad candidate can wait since the bypoll will be held within six months of Rahul Gandhi vacating the seat.
