Preparations have started to implement the new traffic rules in Punjab from August 2022. It has been decided by the traffic police to procure the necessary equipment to crack down on Overspeed and drunken drives, under which 203 alchometers and 350 related kits besides 66 speedo meters will be procured. According to the information received from ADGP Traffic, a team of 81 ASI rank officers is being prepared to put up traffic blockades in 422 police station areas of the state. Apart from this, DSP rank officers are being deputed as nodal officers in all the districts, who will keep records of traffic challans.

It is noteworthy that in 2019, the then Transport Minister Razia Sultana had issued a notification regarding traffic rules for Punjab based on the traffic guidelines issued by the Central Government. Now by amending the same notification, the fine amount has been doubled in cases of drink and drive and over speed. The amended notification has been sent by the Punjab Police to the Chief Minister for the approval of the State Government.

New traffic rules have been prepared. As soon as the order of the state government comes, they will be implemented, said S Srivastava, ADGP Traffic.
