A 23-year-old bride was seriously injured after she was shot in the head during wedding celebrations at a marriage palace near Khai Pheme village in Punjab on Sunday. The incident occurred when some wedding guests indulged in celebratory firing, which has been the cause of multiple tragedies in the region.

The victim was Baljinder Kaur, daughter of Baj Singh from Hasham Toot village. She was to wed Gurpreet Singh of Sarhali Kalan in Tarn Taran district. When the celebrations went haywire with gunfire fired into the air, one of the bullets injured Baljinder in her head.

She was taken straight to a private hospital and is reported to be in a critical condition. According to police sources, CCTV footage is being studied from the marriage palace to find out the circumstances leading to the shooting. Deputy Superintendent of Police Sukhwinder Singh confirmed that investigations are on and that the authorities are taking into account those responsible for the celebratory firing.

The incident raises serious concerns about the dangers of celebratory gunfire, which continues to mar the celebrations at weddings and other festive events in the province of Punjab, despite growing calls for regulation. The police are trying to bring those responsible to book for this senseless act that marred what would otherwise have been a jovial occasion.
