Police have arrested two people in connection with the Pulpally violence episodes for attacking a forest department vehicle.
The arrest occurred after three consecutive deaths caused by wild elephant attacks spurred protests in Kerala’s Wayanad on Saturday, with prohibitory orders imposed on the Pulpally district for two days.
“Police are checking the CCTV footage of the area and two more people involved in the violence will be arrested soon,” Pulpally Police.
Meanwhile, Kerala Governor Arif Mohammed Khan paid a visit to Ajeesh’s family on Monday, after he was killed by a wild elephant.
Earlier on Sunday, Congress MP Rahul Gandhi visited the home of Forest Department watcher VP Paul, who was trampled to death by a wild elephant near Wayanad.
The Congress MP talked with the victim’s relatives and expressed his sympathies. On Saturday, there was a big demonstration in Pakkam, near Pulpally in Wayanad district, following the tragedy.
Gandhi also wrote a letter to Kerala Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan, pleading with him to take decisive action in the case.
According to Kerala Forest Minister AK Saseendran, the victim was attacked after the elephant entered a residential area near Mananthavady.
Following the event, the Kerala government issued a compensation of Rs 10 lakh and promised a job to one of the deceased’s family members.
Meanwhile, Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan asked officials on Saturday to convene a high-level meeting to tackle the issues surrounding wildlife assaults in Wayanad.
According to Kerala’s chief minister, a meeting would be convened in Wayanad on February 20. The meeting will be attended by ministers from the Revenue, Forest, and Local Self-Government Departments. The meeting will be attended by people’s representatives, including representatives from local bodies in Wayanad district, as well as officials, including high-level officials.
