Protests erupted in Iran following the death of Mahsa Amini, a 22-year-old Kurdish woman. Amini died in hospital on Friday, three days after being arrested and beaten by morality officers, according to reports.
Protesters gathered outside the hospital where Amini was being treated at first. According to the Guardian, security forces used pepper spray on the protesters, and several of them were arrested.
Amini’s body was transported on Saturday to her native Kurdistan province for burial.
Hundreds of people attended Amini’s funeral in his hometown. Some yelled anti-government slogans like “death to the dictator!”
Protest videos have gone viral on social media.
Amini was visiting Tehran on Friday when she was arrested by morality police for violating the country’s hijab law. According to reports, she was beaten up in the detention van. The police, on the other hand, believe Amini died of a heart attack.
