Congress leader Priyanka Gandhi Vadra expressed her sorrow over the passing of celebrated folk singer Sharda Sinha, who passed away at age 72 on Tuesday night due to complications from septicaemia. Known for her contributions to Bhojpuri and Maithili folk music, Sinha was fondly regarded as the “Bihar Kokila.”

In a heartfelt message on social media, Priyanka wrote, “The news of Dr. Sharda Sinha ji’s passing, who elevated folk music with her extraordinary talent, is deeply saddening. May her soul rest in peace, and my condolences to her family and admirers.”

Sharda Sinha, a Padma Bhushan awardee, had battled multiple myeloma since 2018 and was on life support in recent days. Her immense contributions to Indian music have left a lasting legacy, especially through her renditions of traditional Chhath Puja songs, which resonate deeply in Bihar.

The singer’s passing coincides with the start of the Chhath Puja festival, a time when her music is especially cherished. Her son, Anshuman Sinha, shared the family’s grief, stating that her final rites would be held in Patna. “Her legacy lives on in her music and in the hearts of the people,” he said.

Tributes poured in from across the nation, with Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Congress President Mallikarjun Kharge, and BJP MP Manoj Tiwari among those who mourned her loss. PM Modi described her as an irreplaceable figure in Indian music, while Bihar Chief Minister Nitish Kumar praised her role in preserving the state’s cultural heritage.

Sharda Sinha’s career, which began in the 1970s, broke new ground in folk music, bringing regional traditions to national prominence. Her songs continue to hold a special place in the hearts of millions across India.
