A delegation from the All India Muslim Personal Law Board (AIMPLB) met with Jharkhand Chief Minister Hemant Soren in Ranchi to discuss issues of significant concern for the Muslim community. The delegation focused primarily on the Board’s opposition to the proposed Uniform Civil Code (UCC), which has been a major point of contention in recent political discourse. The AIMPLB, founded on Shariah principles, strongly opposes any move to impose a uniform set of laws that could affect personal law practices related to marriage, divorce, and inheritance for Indian Muslims.
During the meeting, AIMPLB representatives reiterated their stand against the UCC, arguing that it could undermine the diversity of personal laws that are integral to the religious practices of the Muslim community. The Board has consistently voiced its concerns, stating that any such imposition would be met with strong opposition from Muslim leaders and the broader community. Hemant Soren, a key political figure in Jharkhand, listened to the delegation’s concerns and is expected to weigh the political and social implications of their demands.
This meeting comes at a time when the UCC has become a divisive issue, with many political parties and religious organizations debating its necessity. While the ruling BJP has been pushing for the UCC, citing national unity and equality, the AIMPLB and several other minority groups argue that it infringes on religious freedom.
The discussions between AIMPLB and the Jharkhand CM reflect the broader national debate over religious identity and personal laws, which continues to stir public and political tensions across the country.
