In Strategic Shift, Congress Dissolves Himachal Pradesh State Unit

The Congress party has dissolved its state unit in Himachal Pradesh, one of only three states where it currently holds the chief minister’s office.

In a statement on Wednesday, Congress General Secretary KC Venugopal announced, “Honourable Congress President has approved the proposal to dissolve the entire state unit of the PCC, District Presidents and Block Congress Committees of Himachal Pradesh Congress Committee, with immediate effect.”

The president of the outgoing state Congress unit is Pratibha Singh, widow of the late former chief minister Virbhadra Singh.

A similar move was undertaken in 2019 when the Congress dissolved its state unit but retained its president, Kuldeep Singh Rathore, who had been appointed earlier that year. Pratibha Singh took over as head of the Himachal Pradesh Congress unit in 2022 and was considered a strong contender for the chief minister’s post following the Assembly elections, though the role ultimately went to Sukhvinder Singh Sukhu.

Sources indicate that the recent dissolution of the state unit is part of a planned organizational revamp.
