The newly elected Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) MLAs in Delhi are set to convene on Monday, February 17, at 3 PM at the party’s state office to decide on the Chief Minister (CM) candidate. All BJP legislators have been informed about the meeting.
The Delhi Assembly elections took place on February 5, with results declared on February 8. The BJP secured 48 out of 70 seats, marking its return to power in the state assembly after 27 years. The party had not declared a CM candidate before the polls. With the current assembly’s term ending on February 23, the swearing-in ceremony is expected to be held before then, possibly on February 18 at Ramlila Ground, according to sources.
This election saw a direct contest between the BJP and the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP), with AAP managing to win only 22 seats. Key AAP leaders, including Arvind Kejriwal, Manish Sisodia, Saurabh Bhardwaj, and Satyendra Jain, failed to secure victories.
Several names are being considered for the CM position, with Parvesh Verma emerging as a strong contender after defeating AAP chief Arvind Kejriwal in the New Delhi constituency. Another prominent candidate is Satish Upadhyay, a former Delhi BJP president and ex-president of the party’s youth wing in the capital.
Ashish Sood, known as the Punjabi face of the BJP in Delhi, is also in the race, along with Jitendra Mahajan and Vijender Gupta. If the party opts for a female candidate, Rekha Gupta, a former Delhi Mayor and first-time MLA, could be a potential choice.
