Atishi Steps Down as Delhi CM Following AAP’s Election Defeat, LG Dissolves Assembly

Sunday saw Atishi, Delhi’s outgoing Chief Minister, resigning in line with the results of the February 8 assembly elections and sent her resignation letter to Lt Governor Vinai Kumar Saxena. The official statement stated the same day that the Lieutenant Governor had dissolved the Seventh Legislative Assembly of National Capital Territory of Delhi (NCT Delhi) following her resignation.

Dated February 7, the notice read, “I, Vinai Kumar Saxena, Lieutenant Governor of Delhi, hereby dissolve the Seventh Legislative Assembly of the National Capital Territory of Delhi with effect from 8th February 2025 in exercise of the power given me by sub-section (2)(b) of section 6 of the Government of National Capital Territory of Delhi Act, 1991.”

As the vote counting advanced on Saturday and BJP seemed on course for a victory, Atishi accepted the loss as a “setback” but affirmed AAP’s dedication to keep battling against the party.

Atishi expressed gratitude to her supporters, saying,“I thank the people who trusted me. I also thank my team, which faced all challenges and took our message to the public. I have won my seat but this is not a time for celebration — this is the time to fight.”

Thanking her followers Atishi said, “I am grateful to those who trusted me.” I also express gratitude to my team, which overcame all obstacles and delivered our message to the public. I have won my seat but this is not a time for celebration — this is the time to fight.”

She added, She added, “The battle against BJP’s authoritarianism will continue.” Atishi contested the Kalkaji seat against BJP’s Ramesh Vidhuri and Congress’ Alka Lamba.

Reflecting on AAP’s relentless stance against injustice, Atishi said, “Yes, this may be one step back, but AAP will keep fighting.” Meanwhile, the BJP is poised for a significant victory, making its grand return to Delhi after 26 years and unseating AAP from the national capital in a sweeping win, expanding its influence across the country.
