The ruling Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) and its ally in Haryana the Jannayak Janta Party (JJP) have, for some time now, been at loggerheads with the Opposition over a string of issues. Following the violence that broke out in Nuh on 31 July, there has been a ruckus between the government and Opposition parties in Haryana.
This is likely to continue in the State Legislative Assembly, even as its Monsoon Session begins today. A total 655 questions were received from 59 MLAs for the session and among these, 60 were selected—396 questions are starred and 258 unstarred.
Speaker Gyanchand Gupta on Thursday said all formalities had been completed for the Assembly, which will be in session for three days. Leaders have also held meetings with Chandigarh UT administration and Punjab, amongst others to ensure safety arrangements. The Haryana and Punjab state Assemblies currently share an Assembly building, located in Chandigarh.
In a bid to go over their respective strategies and corner each other in the House, both the ruling party and the Congress called separate meetings in Chandigarh on Thursday. Ahead of the session, the Opposition—Congress and the Indian National Lok Dal (INLD)—was attacking the government over the repetition of 40 questions in the CET exam and the huge losses of life and property during this year’s monsoon.
The Opposition has been demanding immediate compensation for the victims and those who lost farmlands. Thousands of acres of crops were completely destroyed and 46 lives lost in the floods. Congressmen will likely do their best to surround the government on this matter. On the other hand, the ruling BJP and JJP will be on their toes to answer the same. On the other hand, the factionalism is festering in the Congress, which might hinder it in the house.
The INLD has also made preparations to surround the ruling parties in the House, giving 10 calling-attention proposals related to public interest. Ahead of today’s session, Chief Minister Manohar Lal Khattar met with his ministers and MLAs and directed them to “come fully prepared.”
