Playing cricket at Eidgah ground on October 29, Wani was targeted by a lone terrorist who fired three shots at close range, fatally hitting him in the eye, abdomen, and neck. His teammates pursued the assailant, who fired into the air and fled. Wani received initial treatment in Soura but was later airlifted to AIIMS Delhi, where he remained on life support.
