External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar reiterated India’s stance on Pakistan-occupied Kashmir (PoJK), affirming that it unequivocally belongs to India. Speaking during an interactive session in Cuttack, Jaishankar emphasized that PoJK is an integral part of the country, as confirmed by a resolution passed by the Indian Parliament.
Highlighting the significance of bringing PoJK back into the national consciousness, Jaishankar remarked that while it had been somewhat forgotten in the past, recent discussions have revived awareness among the Indian populace about the region’s status.
Regarding the abrogation of Article 370 in Jammu and Kashmir, Jaishankar stressed that this constitutional provision should have been revoked long ago. He attributed separatist sentiments and extremism in the region to the existence of Article 370, which he described as a tool exploited for political interests.
Addressing criticism surrounding the abrogation, Jaishankar emphasized that Article 370 was always intended to be temporary, with its removal being a necessary step towards addressing long-standing issues in Jammu and Kashmir. In a similar sentiment, Defence Minister Rajnath Singh, in a rally at West Bengal’s Darjeeling, reaffirmed India’s claim over PoJK, stating that it “was, is and will remain ours.” Singh expressed confidence that the developmental strides in India would eventually seek integration with India.
