Prime Minister Narendra Modi congratulated Om Birla on his re-election as the Speaker of the 18th Lok Sabha, highlighting the significance of his tenure during this auspicious period. Modi praised Birla’s leadership in the previous term, considering it a landmark in parliamentary history.

“Respected Speaker, it is indeed fortunate for the House that you are holding this position for the second time. Congratulations to you and the entire House. I convey my wishes on behalf of the House. Your re-election during this Amrit Kaal is a great responsibility. With your experience, we look forward to your guidance over the next 5 years. ‘Your sweet smile brings joy to the entire House’,” Modi remarked.

“Being elected Speaker for the second term is a record in itself. Balram Jakhar achieved this after five years, and today you have repeated it. Your parliamentary work ethic is exemplary, and your style will inspire our young MPs,” Modi added.

Modi emphasized that the 17th Lok Sabha, under Birla’s stewardship, has played a pivotal role in shaping India’s future direction.

“The historic decisions made during your tenure will be remembered as a significant legacy of Parliament and your leadership. When the 17th Lok Sabha is analyzed in the future, it will be noted for its role in charting a new course for India,” Modi asserted.

“In the 17th Lok Sabha, crucial legislation such as the Nari Shakti Vandan Adhiniyam 2023, Jammu and Kashmir Reorganization Act, Indian Penal Code, Indian Civil Security Code, Social Security Code, Digital Personal Data Protection Bill, Muslim Women Marriage Rights Protection Bill, Consumer Protection Bill, and Direct Tax were passed, laying a strong foundation for the country,” Modi continued.

Highlighting Birla’s effective leadership, Modi noted that the 17th Lok Sabha achieved the highest productivity in 25 years at 97%.

“You deserve special commendation for this achievement. During the pandemic, you personally checked on every MP’s well-being and ensured uninterrupted House proceedings. Despite the challenges, the productivity soared by 170%, a significant achievement globally,” Modi praised.

The session saw unanimous approval as Om Birla was declared Speaker, with opposition candidate K Suresh withdrawing without a vote. Leader of Opposition Rahul Gandhi also congratulated Birla and escorted him to the chair alongside Parliamentary Affairs Minister Kiren Rijiju and PM Modi.
