Prime Minister Narendra Modi may soon make major changes in the government and the Bharatiya Janata Party organisation in order to rectify the changed situation following the party’s defeat in Karnataka. If sources are to be believed, the effect of this reshuffle will take into consideration states going to polls as well as the general elections which are scheduled for next year. According to party sources, efforts will be made to “stop the negativity that is spreading”. Many are of the view that this potential reshuffle will be similar to the kind of change that the party underwent two years ago. Many eminent faces may be dropped from the cabinet and Ministers serving as the in-charge of several states could be changed.
Close to two years ago, Prime Minister Modi surprised everyone by suddenly expanding his cabinet. The Prime Minister gave chances to new faces while many well-known Ministers were removed. Many in the party are confident that something similar might happen this time around. The effort will be to infuse new enthusiasm among party workers across the country. There has been a round of meetings with the Sangh regarding the change. The Prime Minister will be taking the final decision. Additionally, states including Uttar Pradesh, Rajasthan, Madhya Pradesh, Bihar, Punjab, Bengal, Andhra Pradesh, and Maharashtra may be given special attention. Some leaders from the organisation be asked to leave the government as new faces take their place. The Karnataka defeat, following not long after the defeat in Himachal Pradesh has worried the BJP. Not using PM Modi’s face during campaigns in both states was likely a reason for the loss and a matter of concern for the party. After the BJP’s defeat in Karnataka, Congress has gained a lot of ground. Due to mutual tussle, reports from the election states are not very positive. The matter of Manipur also remains a matter of concern. In view of all these challenges, Prime Minister Modi might potentially consider an extensive rejig of the government and the organisation so that party workers can be recharged again.
