The apex body of the Peoples Movement of Ladakh has renewed its demand for the legislature and the separate laws to safeguard their interests which include government jobs, land and their distinct culture.

This body is now demanding a 30 member legislature on the pattern of Sikkim for the Union Territory of Ladakh as the Union government in the parliament has made it an UT without legislature on 5 August 2019.

When the Peoples Movement of Ladakh delegation met the Union Home Minister Amit Shah a few months back, he promised that he will form a committee to look into all their demands and also promised that they will get the new laws on the pattern of Article 370 to safeguard their interests.

The demand for the legislature is new on the list of demands already put forth by the apex committee for the UT of Ladakh even as the peplum of Kargil and their leadership has expressed desire to be the part of Kashmir valley rather than to be the part of UT of Ladakh.

Apex Committee chief and former MP Thupstan Chhewang has told the media that they want a legislature on the pattern of Sikkim under the sixth schedule of constitution.

Ladakh is already opposing domicile certificate law introduced by the central government in Jammu and Kashmir and have said that they will oppose any such law because the people living in Ladakh region for more than fifteen years would be entitled to citizenship.
