People’s Democratic Party (PDP) leader Waheed Para on Wednesday urged the government to abolish the reservation policy in Jammu and Kashmir, arguing that it undermines the long-term quality and competence of institutions.
In a post on X, Para highlighted the recent Jammu and Kashmir Public Service Commission (JKPSC) 2023 results, revealing that only 40 percent of the candidates selected were from the “open merit” category, despite over 70 percent of the state’s population being in the unreserved category. He made these remarks in reference to the candidates called for the Jammu and Kashmir Combined Competitive Examination 2023.

According to the list, out of 71 candidates called for the medical exam, 42 were from reserved categories. Para stated, “The government must scrap this unjust policy against merit and ensure that reservations reflect true population proportions.”
As an MLA from Pulwama and president of the party’s youth wing, Para emphasized the need for inclusion of Jammu and Kashmir’s youth rather than exclusion. He added, “This issue isn’t limited to job opportunities; it also compromises the long-term quality and competence in all institutions.”
