The Indian hockey team triumphed over Great Britain to secure a spot in the semi-finals of the Paris Olympics, overcoming the challenge of playing with one man less for 42 minutes. Despite Amit Rohidas being red-carded for a stick infraction on a Great Britain player, India managed to force a penalty shootout after a 1-1 draw in regular time.

India took an early lead with captain Harmanpreet Singh’s seventh goal of the tournament, scoring from a penalty corner. However, Great Britain equalized just before half-time. The score remained 1-1 until the end of regulation play. The TV umpire ruled Amit Rohidas’s stick movement as “unnatural,” leading to his red card and leaving India with ten players for over 40 minutes.

Following their historic win against Australia, where they defeated the Kookaburras 3-2 to record their first Olympic victory over them in 52 years, India was determined to continue their momentum. This victory was significant, as their last win against Australia in the Olympics was during the 1972 Munich Games, before the switch to astro-turf.

The match against Australia showcased excellent coordination between the midfield, led by Manpreet Singh and vice-captain Hardik Singh, and the forward line, with standout performances from Gurjant Singh and Sukhjeet Singh. As they faced Great Britain, the Tokyo Olympic bronze medalists aimed to replicate this performance to secure their semi-final berth.

The Indian team’s resilience and skill were on full display, and their determination to excel in the face of adversity has brought them one step closer to Paris Olympics glory.
