A tragic incident occurred in Pakistan’s Jhelum, where a 20-year-old woman was allegedly shot dead by her brothers for making TikTok videos. According to ARY News, the incident occurred in Dhoke Korian, where neighbors had raised objections to the victim’s video-making, which triggered a dispute within the family. In a fit of rage, brothers are alleged to have opened fire, killing their sister right on the spot. After the honor killing, they reportedly attempted to stage the crime as a suicide and tried to destroy evidence from the scene.

According to ARY News, another case of honour killing emerged in Pakistan on Wednesday when an American-Pakistani dual national TikToker was shot dead in Quetta. Even a 15-year-old girl named Hira lost her life in a brutal incident in Quetta. She was reportedly shot dead by her father and maternal uncle who objected to her making TikTok videos.

Police officials say the father, Anwarul-Haq, had left for the United States with his family several years ago. Still, he had come back to Pakistan with his daughter Hira on January 15; however, his wife and two other daughters are still in the U.S. According to police, the murder was a planned one because the father, Anwarul-Haq, had hatched a conspiracy with his brother-in-law Tayyab Ali for the murder. The issue of ‘Karo Kari’ or honor killings continues to claim lives in Pakistan. On January 25, Geo News reported that eight people, including five women, were murdered across four districts in Sindh within three days.

Hundreds of women in Pakistan are killed annually in such murders, mostly at the hands of family members who claim to be protecting their family’s honor. Although these crimes are more prevalent in rural areas, Geo News reports that cases of honor killings are now regularly reported in urban parts of the country.

According to data from the Human Rights Commission of Pakistan, honor killings continued to be a grave concern in 2024, as Sindh and Punjab saw the highest rates ever. From January to November, 346 individuals were victims of these heinous crimes in Pakistan.
