A suicide bombing of the Jandola military camp in Pakistan’s Khyber Pakhtunkhwa province was reportedly conducted by the Tehrik-e-Taliban Pakistan (TTP), as per various media reports.

Pakistani security personnel successfully fended off the attack, killing eight to nine militants close to the Frontier Corps (FC) camp in South Waziristan, Geo News said. Witnesses and police officials testified to hearing a massive explosion and heavy gunfire in the region.

Security sources disclosed that militants tried to attack the Jandola checkpost but were foiled by security personnel. Nevertheless, a suicide bomber did succeed in blowing up an explosives-packed vehicle close to the FC camp. There have been no official security force casualties reported as yet.

The attack follows just a few days after another key security event in Pakistan. On March 11, the Baloch Liberation Army (BLA) hijacked a Jaffar Express train in the Bolan Valley, which was traveling from Quetta to Peshawar. The train had more than 450 passengers on board, including 200 security personnel, prompting a high-stakes standoff between the BLA and Pakistani security forces.

Pakistani officials confirmed on Wednesday that all 50 attackers had been successfully defused. Before the rescue mission came to an end, however, the militants shot dead 21 passengers. The other hostages were evacuated safely.

The recent increase in militant attacks speaks to rising security issues along the border areas in Pakistan, where both the BLA and the TTP were ramping up their operations. Security agencies stay vigilant as they probe the attack and look for possible threats facing the region.
