In reaction to public criticism of viral photos of Pakistani Army officers taking part in a funeral of Lashkar-e-Taiba (LeT) terrorist, Pakistan’s military mouthpiece, DG ISPR, tried to make light of it. He explained that the deceased was merely ‘an innocent family man’ and ‘a preacher’, trying to deny accusations against the Army’s connection with terrorists. The army even produced a Pakistani National ID card to try to prove that the man was merely a party worker.

But Indian officials provided official documents presenting a different view. In a high-level briefing on Operation Sindoor, Foreign Secretary Vikram Misri displayed a photo of senior LeT commander and US-designated global terrorist Hafiz Abdul Rauf leading funeral prayers for those killed in India’s cross-border precision strikes. Misri used the photo to challenge Pakistan’s ongoing subsidization of terror groups, adding, “Providing state funerals for terrorists may be a Pakistani tradition. It doesn’t make much sense to us.”

Once again exposing the truth, India unveiled the identities of top Pakistani officials who had participated in the burial, including Lt Gen Fayyaz Hussain Shah (Corps Commander, IV Corps, Lahore), Maj Gen Rao Imran Satraj, Brig Mohd Furqan Shabbir, Dr Usman Anwar (IGP Punjab), and Malik Sohaib Ahmed Bherth (Member of Punjab’s Provincial Assembly). India blamed Pakistan for awarding ‘formal state honours’ to these terrorists.

This follows after Pakistan rejected blame for the April 22 Pahalgam attack that saw 26 people killed in Jammu and Kashmir despite Resistance Front (TRF), a breakaway faction of Lashkar, having claimed responsibility twice. Pakistan also took steps to stop the United Nations Security Council from listing the TRF.

Misri further stated, “Pakistan was objecting to listing the TRF at the UNSC, yet they appear for the funerals of the individuals carrying out such attacks.” He made a response to the Indian May 7 airstrikes that made it clear that they targeted ‘carefully selected terrorist infrastructure’ and not at military or civilian objectives, countering Pakistan’s misinformation.
