Recent protests that have been taking place in Kenya against tax increases, have led to at least 39 deaths, according to the Kenya National Commission on Human Rights (KNCHR). The protests, spanning from June 18 to July 1, also resulted in 361 injuries, 32 disappearances, and 627 arrests. Initially peaceful demonstrations, mainly involving young people, turned violent after lawmakers approved the controversial tax hikes. Protesters stormed and set fire to parts of the parliament building in Nairobi, and police responded with live ammunition.
President William Ruto, dealing with his most significant challenge since taking office in September 2022, confirmed 19 deaths in a TV interview but denied responsibility and promised an investigation on Sunday. The KNCHR criticized both the excessive police force and the violent actions of some protesters. Despite Ruto’s refusal to sign the tax bill, activists are planning new protests on Tuesday, with online campaigns using hashtags like “Occupy Everywhere” and “Ruto must go.”
India has advised its citizens in Kenya to be careful and stay away from areas where protests are happening. The Indian Embassy in Kenya stressed the importance of staying safe during the current violence and unrest.
