Is Imran Khan Dead? Pakistan Government Debunks Viral Death Rumours

Pakistan’s Ministry of Information and Broadcasting on Saturday called out as “fake” an online circulating press release that falsely asserted imprisoned former Prime Minister Imran Khan had passed away in jail. The ministry called on people to “refuse irresponsible actions” and avoid falling for fake news.

The falsified statement, which was made in the name of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, falsely stated that Khan had died in judicial custody and an investigation into the incident had been initiated. It further stated that Pakistan would maintain “complete transparency” and have UN agencies participate in the inquiry—a statement now proven to be false.

Khan Faces Immediate Threats to Life

As a response to increasing concerns, Imran Khan‘s party, Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI), has gone to the Islamabad High Court to seek his release. KP Chief Minister Ali Amin Gandapur submitted the plea, mentioning a threat of a drone strike at Adiala Jail and Khan’s declining health due to extended detention.

The Islamabad High Court has been moved for the release of Imran Khan. in light of the prevailing war scenario with India. and for fear of a drone attack on Adiala Jail,” said the party.

The chief minister also maintained that Khan’s extended detention contravenes his fundamental rights and asked the court to take resort under constitutional provisions for parole.
