The White House stated on Tuesday that India’s relationship with Russia enables it to urge Russian President Vladimir Putin to seek resolution to the Ukraine conflict. This remark followed PM Modi’s emphasis to President Putin that dialogue, not warfare, holds the key to resolving the crisis.
During a press briefing, White House Press Secretary Karine Jean-Pierre described India as a “strategic partner” of the US, engaging in open discussions including its ties with Russia. She stressed the importance of all countries, including India, supporting efforts for a lasting peace in Ukraine.
Regarding PM Modi’s talks with Putin, Jean-Pierre noted, “India is a strategic partner with whom we engage in full and frank dialogue, including their relationship with Russia… It is important for all our allies to realize this.” She added, “We also believe India’s long-standing relationship with Russia gives it the ability to urge President Putin to end his brutal and unprovoked war in Ukraine.”
Jean-Pierre’s statement came after PM Modi raised concerns about the tragic deaths of children in conflicts during his meeting with Putin, expressing deep sorrow over such losses. He underscored the pain felt universally when innocent lives are lost, particularly highlighting the recent missile strike on a children’s hospital in Kyiv.
PM Modi emphasized, “Whether it’s war, conflicts, or terror attacks, the loss of innocent lives pains everyone. When innocent children are killed, it is heartbreaking. This pain is immense.” He emphasized the necessity of pursuing peace through dialogue rather than through armed confrontation.
During his first visit to Russia since the conflict erupted in 2022, PM Modi reiterated India’s advocacy for peace and diplomacy in resolving the Ukraine-Russia conflict. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy expressed disappointment over PM Modi’s visit to Russia amid ongoing hostilities, describing it as a setback to peace efforts.
Zelenskyy took to social media to express his dismay, citing casualties from a Russian missile strike on a children’s hospital in Kyiv. Despite these tensions, PM Modi conducted bilateral discussions with Putin and engaged with the Indian community in Moscow during his two-day official visit from July 8-9.
