India and Pakistan have agreed on a complete and immediate ceasefire after days of hectic diplomacy. The decision marks a sudden de-escalation of tensions between the two nuclear-powered neighbours after weeks of increased military activity.
The decision follows cross-border military exchanges in which both sides had attacked installations along the Line of Control (LoC). The skirmishes had led to fears of an escalation of the conflict in the region.
Indian Troops Have High Operational Readiness
In spite of the ceasefire agreement, Indian defense officials have stated that the armed forces are still on high alert. Highlighting the need for readiness, top officials reiterated that India’s adherence to the ceasefire does not mean dropping its guard.
“While we will be sticking to the consensus that has been achieved today, that is the Indian Army, the Indian Navy and the Indian Air Force. We remain equally ready and never alert and committed to protect the sovereignty and integrity of the motherland,” Commodore Raghu R Nair said.
Strict Warning Against Any Future Provocation
The Indian armed forces also made a strong warning about any future aggression from Pakistan. Highlighting India’s determination to defend itself, the troops asserted that they will not be afraid to act firmly if attacked.
“Each misadventure by Pakistan has been responded to with strength and each future escalation will be met with a decisive response. We are still fully operationally ready to initiate whatever operations may be necessary in defence of the nation,” Commodore Nair said.
Ceasefire a Step Forward, But Not a Resolution
As much as the ceasefire is being applauded as a seminal step towards easing tensions, authorities and experts note that it fails to address the underlying issues concerning India-Pakistan relations. Strategic and humanitarian talks are poised to follow the ceasefire. Based on the US State Department, these talks will likely be hosted at a third-party location in the near future.
The short-lived peacefulness along the LoC has been viewed as an opportunity for further talks but with both nations keeping their vigil. For India, the path to peace was established on ground of preparedness and devotion towards national security.
