US President Joe Biden expressed support for UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer’s push for closer UK-EU ties during their first meeting at the White House on Wednesday. Biden hailed the US-UK alliance as crucial, calling Britain the “knot” that strengthens transatlantic relations. He emphasized the need to preserve peace in Northern Ireland amid Brexit concerns.
At the NATO summit in Washington, Starmer reaffirmed the UK’s commitment to the alliance and pledged significant military aid to Ukraine in its conflict with Russia. He also sought stronger ties with European leaders and aimed to secure an EU-UK security pact, accompanied by his European relations minister, Nick Thomas-Symonds.
During their talks, Starmer commended Biden for hosting NATO’s 75th anniversary, highlighting the enduring strength of the US-UK “special relationship.”
The leaders also discussed lighter topics, including Biden’s response to a critical article and banter about England’s football victory. Starmer presented Biden with an Arsenal football shirt and a framed copy of the Atlantic Charter, symbolizing their shared commitment to international cooperation.
After their meeting, the Bidens hosted Starmer and other NATO leaders at the White House, underscoring the importance of strong alliances in addressing global challenges.
