Austrian Chancellor Karl Nehammer emphasized the longstanding and trusting relationship between Austria and India, dating back to the 1950s. During a joint press conference with Prime Minister Narendra Modi in Vienna on Wednesday. Praising the bilateral ties, Nehammer highlighted India’s pivotal role in Austria’s history, particularly in the successful negotiations leading to the Austrian State Treaty in 1955.
“What unites India and Austria is concern over the development of the geopolitical situation,” Chancellor Nehammer underscored, indicating shared strategic interests between the two nations.
Nehammer also discussed his extensive discussions with PM Modi regarding Russia’s aggression against Ukraine, describing the talks as “very intensive.” “As the Federal Chancellor of Austria, it is particularly important for me to understand India’s assessment and to convey European concerns and worries,” he stated.
Addressing broader geopolitical issues, Chancellor Nehammer noted discussions on the Middle East conflict and highlighted the positive aspects of bilateral cooperation between India and Austria.
PM Modi’s visit to Austria marks a significant milestone, as he is the first Indian Prime Minister to visit the country in 41 years, since Indira Gandhi’s visit in 1983. His arrival follows a two-day official visit to Russia, where he met with President Vladimir Putin.
Upon landing in Austria, PM Modi was warmly welcomed by Austrian Foreign Minister Alexander Schallenberg and Indian Ambassador to Austria, Shambhu Kumaran. The visit included a dinner hosted by Chancellor Nehammer on Tuesday, reflecting the warm diplomatic relations between the two countries.
The visit underscores India’s efforts to strengthen diplomatic ties and explore further cooperation with European nations amid ongoing global challenges.
