In response to the April 22 terror attack that killed people in Pahalgam, India initiated Operation Sindoor on May 7, targeting nine terrorist camps in Pakistan and Pakistan-occupied Kashmir (PoK). The operation resulted in the killing of more than 100 terrorists. These camps were associated with globally banned organizations like Lashkar-e-Taiba (LeT), Jaish-e-Mohammed (JeM), and Hizbul Mujahideen.
Some of the targeted targets included LeT’s training centers associated with the 26/11 Mumbai terror attacks, for example, the Muridke headquarters in Punjab province, Pakistan. This site had been earlier visited by David Headley and Tahawwur Rana and had allegedly received a Rs 10 lakh donation from Osama bin Laden for a guest house.
Top Wanted Terrorists Eliminated
Some of those who died in the raid were India’s top-wanted terrorists: Abu Jundal (Mudassar Khadian Khas), Hafiz Muhammed Jameel, Yusuf Azhar, Abu Akasha, and Mohammad Hassan Khan. They were top commanders within Lashkar-e-Taiba and Jaish-e-Mohammed and had planned several attacks on Indian ground.
Who was Abu Jundal?
One of the top targets, Abu Jundal, was the Lashkar-e-Taiba commander of Muridke and was directly involved in the planning and training activities of the outfit. He was directly responsible for preparing terrorists for large-scale attacks, such as the 26/11 Mumbai attack.
After his death, funeral prayers for Jundal were performed at a government school, headed by Jamaat-ud-Dawa chief Hafiz Abdul Rauf, a UN-listed international terrorist. The funeral ceremony was attended by senior Pakistani government officials, including a serving Lieutenant General and Punjab Police Inspector General.
