A dramatic scene unfolded on a busy road in Uttar Pradesh’s Kanpur on Friday evening when a 21-year-old man and his 19-year-old girlfriend were publicly assaulted by the man’s mother for being in a relationship that the family reportedly disapproved of. The incident, caught on camera, quickly went viral on social media, drawing widespread attention and outrage.
Couple Attacked Over Disapproved Relationship
The young couple, identified as Rohit and his girlfriend, were sitting on a scooter and eating chowmein at a roadside stall when they were spotted by Rohit’s parents, Shivkaran and Sushila. On seeing the couple together, the parents lost their temper.
According to eyewitnesses and the video, Sushila stormed toward the scooter and began thrashing both Rohit and his girlfriend with slippers. She dragged the girl by her hair while yelling abuses and blamed her for leading her son astray and making him a spendthrift. Rohit tried to shield his girlfriend, but a crowd had already surrounded the scooter, preventing them from escaping.

The girl, visibly shaken, later got off the scooter and attempted to speak to one of the men in the crowd, only to be angrily told to leave. The video shows the couple distressed and humiliated, while the crowd looked on without intervening.
Police Respond to Viral Video
Reacting to the uproar, Kanpur Nagar Police Commissionerate addressed the issue through an official post on X:
“The matter is in the knowledge of the local police, the police have separated both the parties after counselling and further necessary legal action is being taken. The law and order situation is normal.”
The authorities are reportedly reviewing the video footage and considering legal steps, especially since the incident involved public assault and humiliation.
This incident has reignited discussions on moral policing, parental control over adult relationships, and public shaming in conservative societies.
