UP ATS deconstructs ISIS module in Aligarh Muslim University, two apprehended

In a significant development, the Uttar Pradesh Anti-Terrorism Squad (ATS) has detained two individuals, Amas alias Faraz Ahmed and Abdul Samad Malik, for their alleged involvement in establishing an ISIS module at Aligarh Muslim University (AMU).

The arrest is part of an ongoing investigation initiated in November 2023, prompted by intelligence inputs concerning illicit activities and anti-national plans associated with ISIS. According to the official press release from UP ATS, Amas was apprehended on January 8th, 2024, in Aligarh after evading capture since the arrest of his associates on November 3. A reward of Rs 25,000 was announced for information leading to his arrest before his apprehension. Abdul Samad Malik, with a similar reward, had surrendered before the court earlier.

The ATS acted on information suggesting individuals working for ISIS and engaging in anti-national activities. After verifying this information, ATS registered a case on November 3, 2023, leading to the arrest of seven individuals, including Abdullah Arsalan, Maaz Bin Tariq, and Wajihuddin. A case was registered under IPC 13/23, Section 121A/122 IPC, 13/18/18V/38 Unlawful Activities Prevention Act in Lucknow, Uttar Pradesh.

Investigations revealed that both Amas Ahmed and Abdul Samad Malik are students of AMU and supporters of ISIS, planning a major terrorist attack. Amas Ahmed, an AMU psychology graduate in 2022, had appeared for the MBA entrance exam in 2023. Abdul Samad Malik was pursuing an MSW (Master of Social Work) at AMU.

Both detainees will be presented in court following the established procedures, and further legal actions will be taken.

Investigations are underway for additional information.
