Unique temple dedicated to Lord Krishna and Meera Bai

In India and abroad, there are several devotees of Lord Shri Krishna who not only worship him but also follow the wisdom bestowed by him in the Bhagavad Gita. Lord Krishna has many famous and ancient temples in India where devotees gather, and these temples are centres of faith. Among these, one of the most renowned temples in Jaipur, Amer, holds a unique distinction. In this temple, Lord Krishna is not worshipped alongside Radha but is revered with the devotion of Meera Bai.

On the occasion of Janmashtami, devotees will have the opportunity to witness the birth ceremony of Lord Krishna at the Jagat Shiromani Temple in Amer, Jaipur.

The Jagat Shiromani Temple in Amer, which is 478 years old, is renowned for its rich history and cultural significance. It houses the idol of Lord Krishna along with a representation of Meera Bai, a devotee who was completely enthralled by her devotion to Him.

As per the information provided by the temple priest, Rajendra Prasad Sharma, the idol of Meera Bai was brought to Amer from Chittorgarh by Maharaja Mansingh I after the Battle of Haldighati in June 1576. Rani Karnavati of Mewar, in memory of her son Maharaja Jagat Singh, established the Jagat Shiromani Temple in Amer.

According to the Archaeology Department, this temple was constructed between 1599 and 1608 CE, in the South Indian architectural style. The temple’s architecture is a marvel, with intricate carvings and sculptures adorning the yellow, white, and black marble structure. The temple’s sanctum sanctorum features statues of Radha, Giridhar, Gopal, and Vishnu, symbolizing the essence of Vaishnavism. A grand hall showcases exceptional artwork and craftsmanship. The entrance of the temple is graced by a statue of Garuda, the divine vehicle of Lord Vishnu.

The temple is adorned with fine detailing on its archways, doorways, and pillars. The iconic temple gate, dedicated to Lord Vishnu, also displays exquisite craftsmanship.

The construction of the temple was a grand affair, with a total expenditure of approximately INR 11.77 lakh. The temple’s main sanctum, grand hall, elephant sculptures, horse sculptures, and ornate arches reflect the opulence and grandeur of Rajasthan’s Rajput architectural heritage.

Rani Karnavati’s wish was for her son Maharaja Jagat Singh to be remembered through this temple for centuries to come, making it a global landmark. Hence, she named it Jagat Shiromani, which translates to the Jewel of the World.
