UK Elections: Labour Party Gets Punjabi Support, Tanmanjeet Singh Re-elected

Nail-biting UK General Elections concluded on Friday with the Labour Party securing a landslide victory. As voters paved the way for Keir Starmer to become the country’s next prime minister, the contribution of the Punjabi community to his triumph has become evident. One individual, Tanmanjeet Singh Dhesi, has particularly come to the limelight. Originally from Jalandhar, Punjab, he has once again been elected as a Member of Parliament.

Dhesi, who became the youngest Sikh mayor of Gravesham in England, has already made history as the first turban-wearing Sikh MP in the British Parliament. Proficient in multiple languages, Tanmanjeet, affectionately known as Channi at home and Tan in Slough, is committed to the development of his constituency and aims to uphold the pride of the Indian-origin community. He hails from the village of Raipur Pharala. His father, Jaspal Singh Dhesi, moved to the UK in 1977, establishing a successful business and becoming the president of the Gravesham Gurdwara.

Educational Journey

Born in the UK, Tanmanjeet was sent to Punjab for his education to gain a deep understanding of the Punjabi language, literature, and culture. He lived with his uncle, Paramjeet Singh Raipur, and studied at Shivalik Public School in Mohali and later at Dashmesh Academy in Anandpur Sahib. Amid the peak of terrorism in Punjab, Paramjeet Singh took Tanmanjeet back to the UK. Despite returning to the UK, Tanmanjeet maintained his ties with Punjab. After completing his PhD from the University of London and Cambridge University, he ventured into business and gradually leaned towards the Labour Party, eventually becoming the youngest mayor of Gravesham.
