TRIPURA ROW: TRINAMOOL MPS STAGE PROTEST OUTSIDE MHA

Earlier here on Monday, several Trinamool Congress (TMC) members staged a protest outside the Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA) over the alleged police brutality in Tripura. West Bengal CM Mamata Banerjee has received an appointment with PM Narendra Modi on Wednesday to discuss the BSF issues and the developments in Bengal. However, the TMC protestors sought an appointment from the Union Home Minister Amit Shah to discuss the situation of Tripura and the police brutality in the state.

“We have not yet been given an appointment by the Home Minister Amit Shah. If we get to meet him, we will discuss the situation of Tripura,” TMC MP Saugata Roy told The Daily Guardian.

Later, TMC MPs met the Home Minister Amit Shah, who would seek a report from the state soon. As per the reports, CISF and Delhi Police personnel are present at the spot. TMC has blamed the BJP for destroying democracy in Tripura.

“BJP has destroyed democracy in Tripura. A huge number of TMC people have gathered around but the Tripura police and Tripura CM want to destroy the state politically. Tripura people want TMC to rule the state,” Shyamlal Santra, TMC MLA from Sonamukhi, West Bengal, told the paper.

On Sunday, TMC Youth Congress chief Saayoni Ghosh was arrested by Agartala Police under the IPC section 307 and section 153. The TMC MP Sushmita Dev stated that the state was in a chaotic situation and the DGP and IGP were not available on phones. Around 16 TMC MPs, including Derek O’Brien, Sukhendu Sekhar Roy, Santanu Sen, and Mala Roy had arrived at the party office. Ahead of the civic body election, the Supreme Court has agreed to hear the contempt plea of TMC members, who are claiming that the law and order situation in Tripura is “worsening.” The contempt plea will be heard on Tuesday.

Trinamool Youth Congress President Saayoni Ghosh, who was arrested by Tripura Police for allegedly spreading ruckus during a public meeting of Chief Minister Biplab Deb, has been granted bail on Monday by the Chief Judicial Magistrate court in West Tripura.

Ghosh was charged with attempted murder. On Sunday, police said Saayoni was speeding past the meeting of Chief Minister Biplob Deb. At that time, Saayoni’s car hit a pedestrian.

Trinamool state general secretary Kunal Ghosh, however, claimed that all this was planned to disrupt Monday’s meeting of Abhishek Banerjee in Tripura. After Saayoni’s bail on Monday, Kunal Ghosh took to Twitter demanding a “Legal response to a case based on baseless political motives.”

Tensions in Tripura increased after violent incidents in the run-up to the elections to the Agartala Municipal Corporation (AMC) and 12 other municipal bodies slated for November 25.
