Stray animals on rise in Zirakpur, pose challenges

Zirakpur’s rapid urban growth brings a significant problem – an increasing number of stray animals, mainly cows, becoming a serious issue across the city.
Wandering cow herds on the roads have become a critical problem, causing trouble for pedestrians and heightening the risk of accidents, particularly in the foggy nights of winter.

The administration has yet to implement measures such as placing radium belts around the necks of these stray cows or developing concrete strategies to relocate them from the roads.

The lack of intervention has resulted in several accidents, with unfortunate cases of loss of lives reported in Zirakpur. It is estimated that there are over 3000 stray cows on the roads in Zirakpur, including areas like Baltana, Dhakoli, Peermuchalla, and nearby villages, and this number continues to rise.

The issue is not only impacting public safety but also reflects the need for proactive measures to address the growing population of stray animals. Immediate attention and effective plans are essential to mitigate the risks associated with stray cows roaming in herds and to ensure the well-being of both pedestrians and commuters in Zirakpur.
