More than 65 Congressmen, including senior state leaders, were on Wednesday detained for allegedly taking part in a “resistance rally” to protest the gangrape of a Dalit girl in Hathras, Uttar Pradesh.
Gujarat Police detained around 65 activists, including Congress state president Amit Chavda, Congress acting president Hardik Patel, MLA Shailesh Parmar and 4 women Congress workers. MLA Imran Khedawala has been placed under house arrest. Apart from this, Congress MLAs Gyasuddin Sheikh and Naushad Solanki were also detained.
Gujarat Congress organised a “resistance rally” in Ahmedabad to protest against the incident but the rally was not allowed by the police. Congressional resistance rallies have not yet been approved. Sector-1 JCP Rajendra Asari said that no permission was given for the rally. He further said that the rally was not allowed as there was no possibility of maintaining social distance in the rally as cases of Covid-19 are on a rise.
