Police said on Friday that a 19-year-old woman was fighting for her life after a stalker allegedly barged into her home and set her on fire in Jharkhand’s Dumka district late Thursday for refusing to marry him.
Shivendra Prasad, a sub-divisional police officer, said the stalker, Rajesh Raut, insisted on marrying the woman despite their marriage in February. He added that the two had known each other since 2019.
Prasad stated that the woman and her family turned down his proposal. She has been referred to Ranchi’s Rajendra Institute of Medical Sciences (RIMS) in critical condition, he added.
The district administration gave her family 1 lakh as immediate financial assistance for treatment.
In her statement, the woman claimed Raut recently threatened her with the same fate as a Class 12th student who was set on fire by a stalker on August 23 while she was sleeping at her home.
