Speaker Om Birla accepts notice for no-confidence motion against Modi govt

On Wednesday, Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla approved the notice for a no-confidence move against Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s government from the Opposition Indian National Developmental Inclusive Alliance (INDIA).

Congress legislator Gaurav Gogoi of Assam had earlier issued the notice at 9:20 a.m. as part of the INDIA grouping’s attempt to force Modi to respond on matters such as the Manipur violence.

Speaker Birla furthermore revealed that he will discuss the matter with all parties, according to the rules. “I will inform you about the schedule for the discussion.”

Any no-confidence notice submitted before 10 a.m. must be heard on the same day, according to the regulations.

According to sources familiar with the situation, the motion is unlikely to be debated in the Lok Sabha on Wednesday.

The notice was issued following acrimony and disturbances in Parliament, as well as the BJP’s unwillingness to accept the Opposition’s demand that Modi speak on the Manipur issue.

Meanwhile, the Union Home Minister Amit Shah made another attempt on Tuesday to break the impasse in both houses of Parliament by writing to Opposition leaders and offering a discussion on the situation in the northeastern state.

INDIA’s leaders met on Tuesday to examine a proposal to initiate a no-confidence motion. TMC’s Rajya Sabha floor leader Derek O’Brien later took to Twitter and penned “The overall Parliamentary strategy is in place for the INDIA parties. Tactics to execute that strategy evolve every day. Rule 198 of the Lok Sabha states the procedure of moving a no-confidence motion. Picture abhi baki hai (wait and watch)!”

The administration has the support of at least 332 Lok Sabha legislators and is not under threat from the no-confidence move.
