Former Congress President Sonia Gandhi has secured a seat in the Rajya Sabha elections from Rajasthan, marking her first term as a Rajya Sabha MP. She was nominated by the Congress party for Rajasthan. Additionally, both BJP candidates, Madan Rathore and Chunnilal Garasiya, have also been elected as Rajya Sabha members.
Following the announcement, Madan Rathore and Chunnilal Garasiya received their certificates, while Sonia Gandhi’s election notification was received by State Congress President Govind Singh Dotasara. Commenting on Sonia Gandhi’s election as a Rajya Sabha MP, Congress State President Govind Singh Dotasara stated that this development will bolster the Congress party in Rajasthan.
He emphasised that the party will convey Rajasthan’s key issues to Sonia Gandhi, who will champion them prominently in the Rajya Sabha.
With these unopposed elections on Tuesday, the Congress party’s majority in the Rajya Sabha from Rajasthan remains unchanged. The Congress holds 6 out of 10 seats in Rajasthan, while the BJP controls 4 seats. A vacancy arose in the Rajya Sabha following the resignation of Dr. Kirodilal Meena. Furthermore, the terms of former Prime Minister Dr Manmohan Singh and Union Forest and Environment Minister Bhupendra Yadav in the Rajya Sabha will conclude on April 3, 2024.
