On the occasion of the martyrdom anniversary of the Ninth Guru, Guru Tegh Bahadur Ji, Sikhs in both India and abroad engaged in Nagar Kirtan processions and prayers within the premises of various Gurdwaras, paying homage to the Guru’s sacrifice. In this special celebration today, Nagar Kirtan processions were organized at different locations.
A grand Nagar Kirtan was organized from the historic Gurdwara Shri Bibaangarh Sahib in Kiratpur Sahib by the Shiromani Gurdwara Parbandhak Committee. The procession, started from Gurdwara Shri Kesgarh Sahib, led by Jathedar Singh Sahib Giani Sultan Singh, covered a distance of 12 kilometers and concluded with prayers at Gurdwara Shri Sis Ganj Sahib in Anandpur Sahib.
The Nagar Kirtan commenced with the ardas (prayer) led by Jathedar Singh Sahib Giani Sultan Singh at Takht Shri Kesgarh Sahib. On this occasion, Bhai Amarjeet Singh Chawla, a member of the Shiromani Gurdwara Parbandhak Committee, and a large number of devotees were present. The Nagar Kirtan procession was led by the Panj Pyare and the Nishaan Saheb Singhs, proceeded with the holy scripture Sri Guru Granth Sahib Ji placed under a beautifully decorated canopy. Various schools’ students, under the leadership of Panj Pyare, played the traditional instruments during the Nagar Kirtan. It is worth noting that during the martyrdom of Guru Tegh Bahadur Ji when he sacrificed his life for the protection of the Hindu religion at Chandni Chowk in Delhi, his head was brought to Kiratpur Sahib by Bhai Jaita Ji. At that time, the head was sanctified at Gurdwara Shri Sis Ganj Sahib, and today, the historical Gurdwara Shri Sis Ganj Sahib is magnificently illuminated on this auspicious occasion. The Nagar Kirtan procession, commenced this morning, concluding at rhe Gurdwara Shri Sis Ganj Sahib in Anandpur Sahib in the evening. It is noteworthy that earlier in the day, the Akhand Paath Sahib (continuous reading of Guru Granth Sahib) was also held at Gurdwara Bebhangarh Sahib, and later, a religious congregation was organized at Gurdwara Sis Ganj Sahib.
