SC junks Opposition plea over misuse of central agencies

The Supreme Court on Wednesday refused to take notice of a petition filed by 14 Opposition parties that accused PM Modi’s government of misusing its power and using central probe agencies to harass its political rivals.

Senior advocate Abhishek Manu Singhvi filed the pleas on behalf of the Opposition leaders and parties. He further added that there has been a sharp increase in the number of cases registered by the ED and CBI since 2014, when PM Modi took charge as Prime Minister.

The Chief Justice of India, DY Chandrachud, however, voiced scepticism regarding the petition’s legality and viability. He questioned Mr Singhvi about whether he was seeking immunity for opposition parties from investigation and prosecution and whether they had any special rights as citizens.
