Purohit’s resignation rejected, to stay as Governor

Punjab Governor Banwarilal Purohit announced that he will continue to serve in his position, more than a month after submitting his resignation to President Droupadi Murmu. Purohit revealed that his resignation was not accepted, stating, “They said accept nahi karenge (will not be accepted), so I am here.”

The decision to resign was initially based on family reasons, with Purohit explaining, “I wanted to go purely for family reasons. My wife came from Nagpur and went after 10 days. I wanted to go for my family…no other reason.” Purohit, who has been in office since August 2021, addressed a press conference to highlight the achievements of the Union Territory.

In response to recent developments in the Chandigarh mayoral polls and allegations of rigging, Purohit expressed his commitment to the employees’ housing scheme. He stated, “If employees agree on collector’s rates, we will revive the employees’ housing scheme,” emphasizing his dedication to providing housing for the workforce.

Additionally, Purohit outlined future plans for Chandigarh, promising an additional 100 electric buses and the establishment of a state-of-the-art garbage processing plant. He asserted, “Within two years, Chandigarh will be in the top five,” emphasizing the city’s achievements in energy efficiency, mobility sharing, and education.

The administrator also highlighted the city’s financial growth, noting increasing funds each year. Purohit stated, “Chandigarh has got increasing funds every year,” citing allocations of Rs 6,513 crore in the 2024-25 budget. He concluded by sharing plans for projects worth Rs 628 crore, focusing on colleges, urban development, healthcare, and education, showcasing the city’s commitment to progress and development.
