Punjab farmers’ protest: Internet shutdown amidst rising tensions

During ongoing farmer protests in Punjab, a significant development arises as internet services are shut down. The situation escalates with the Central Home Ministry ordering the closure of internet services in several Punjab districts until late on February 16. Notably, farmers have declared a nationwide strike for the same day.

Meanwhile, a significant statement has been made by Punjab Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann. He has expressed objection to the decision of the central government to shut down the internet and has demanded its immediate restoration. Aam Aadmi Party spokesperson Malvinder Singh Kang stated that the decision to shut down the internet by the central government is highly inappropriate.

It’s important to note that on February 12, Punjab farmers staged a protest in Fatehgarh Sahib regarding their pending demands. Following this, a meeting was held with central ministers in Chandigarh, which remained inconclusive. Subsequently, the farmers marched towards Delhi, leading to the central government’s decision to shut down the internet citing public safety concerns.
