Punjab Congress MLA Sukhpal Singh Khaira declares shift in focus towards state’s welfare

In a public gathering held in Bulath, Kapurthala district, Punjab Congress MLA Sukhpal Singh Khaira expressed gratitude to leaders from various political parties who supported him during his time in jail. Addressing the crowd, Khaira announced his commitment to transform his political agenda from personal to one dedicated “all for Punjab.”

Having read 10 books during his incarceration, Khaira shared that the story of Nelson Mandela inspired him the most. He emphasized the need to let go of grudges, drawing parallels between his father’s illegal confinement and the experiences of figures like Mandela.
The gathering, centered on issues such as the National Security Act, fake police encounters, and government oppression, saw Khaira recounting his father’s history with incarceration during the Emergency and his association with Sant Jarnail Singh Bhindranwale.

Acknowledging political opponents, Khaira extended thanks to leaders like Bibi Jagir Kaur, BJP state president Sunil Jakhar, and others for their support during his time in jail. He asserted solidarity with Bikram Singh Majithia, hinting at possible challenges both might face.
Addressing concerns about the exodus of Punjab’s youth, Khaira urged unity among political parties and emphasized the need to address issues affecting the state. He questioned the safety of Sikhs abroad and called for attention to be given to their well-being both domestically and internationally.

While praising leaders within the Congress party, Khaira urged an end to internal conflicts, emphasizing the importance of speaking up for Sikh interests. He called for restrictions on land purchases in Punjab and suggested measures to safeguard the state’s primary asset—water. Despite recent legal challenges, the Supreme Court’s dismissal of the state government’s plea against Khaira’s bail marked a turning point in his political journey.
