PU hosts North Zone Hockey Championship for women

The Association of Indian Universities (AIU), headquartered in New Delhi, has inaugurated the North Zone Inter-University Hockey Championship at Punjabi University. This year’s competition, exclusively for female players, boasts the participation of 29 teams from various states in North India, making it a significant event for Punjabi University, which also hosted the championship in 2019.

Prof. Ajita, the Director of the Sports Department at Punjabi University, highlighted that the championship will run until December 24, 2023. She noted the involvement of 29 teams from different North Indian states, with four teams set to qualify for the National Championship based on their performance in this tournament.

Expressing enthusiasm, Coach Minakshi Randhawa stated that the winning four teams would represent their respective zones in the National Championship. She elaborated on the competition’s format, with teams from all over North India divided into four zones (North, South, East, West). The victors from each zone will progress to the next stage of the National Championship.

Vice-Chancellor Prof. Arvind congratulated the Sports Department, emphasizing the tournament’s role in promoting competition and sportsmanship on the university campus. He acknowledged the university’s dual role as both host and participant, contributing to the success of the national-level tournament.

The Director of Public Relations underscored the positive impact of hosting such tournaments on the university’s reputation and the fostering of a spirit of healthy competition among campuses. Inter-university sports events not only elevate the standards of participating universities but also contribute to the overall development of the sports culture in the country.
